Programs
Hispanic & Minority Health Education Services - Hispanic & Minority Health Education Services implements an educational program that promotes a healthy life style for Hispanic and African-American populations in the Middle Tennessee community. Churches and community organizations identify a volunteer to work with Catholic Charities staff. The church will host a series of events and presentations that will promote a healthy life style using an accepted curriculum and other relevant materials. ESL (English as a Second Language) classes are available in collaboration with other institutions and organizations. Bilingual playgroup for preschool children and their mothers is a very popular program available to mothers with children ages 3-5.
The Nueva Vida Program is a prenatal program offered in collaboration with St. Thomas Health Clinic and Baptist Hospital. A Catholic Charities caseworker is involved in accessing TennCare coverage and providing related translation services required for identified patients of this clinic.
Hispanic Family Services (HFS) HFS provides access to basic needs, healthcare, case management, interpreter services, assistance while applying for benefits at the Department of Human Services, school enrollment, cultural assimilation, and referrals to non-provided services.
Volunteer Opportunities Volunteers must be fluent in Spanish as 98% of our calls are from Spanish-only clients.
Managing main phone line for initial intake and computer database entry. Daytime Learning the referral sources within our agency and outside organizations. Daytime Assisting walk-in clients filling out applications for benefits such as Food Stamps, ER Medicaid, Families First, and TennCare. Daytime Helping with our Playgroup ESL program on Mondays 9 to 11:00 a.m. and/or 1-3:00 p.m. Getting materials ready for Preschool classes each week. Daytime Tutoring Adult ESL classes or playing games with the children of those adults learn English. Evening Assisting with quarterly newsletter gathering necessary information to complete calendar. DESCRIPCI�N DEL PROGRAMA: El programa de servicios para las familias hispanas provee: necesidades b�sicas, acceso al cuidado m�dico e informaci�n b�sica sobre el sistema del cuidado de la salud en los Estados Unidos, ayuda durante aplicaci�n de seguro de salud y otros beneficios de Departamento de Servicios Humanos, inscripci�n en las escuelas para ni�os, asimilaci�n cultural y lecciones de Ingles para ni�os y adultos. Nuestras oficinas participan en el programa prenatal "Nueva Vida" en la cl�nica de Santo Tomas en la Avenida Charlotte, en el oeste de Nashville. OPORTUNIDADES PARA VOLUNTARIOS Los voluntarios deben ser elocuentes en Espa�ol ya que 98% de nuestros clientes hablan Espa�ol solamente. Oportunidades durante el d�a son las siguientes: Contestar las llamadas telef�nicas y tomar los datos iniciales. Aprender los recursos disponibles dentro de nuestra organizaci�n y fuera. Prestando ayuda a los clientes que vienen a la oficina a llenar aplicaciones para beneficios tales come cupones de comida, seguro de salud y familias primeras. Preparando los materiales necesarios para las clases del jard�n de infancia (playgroup) Ayudando a obtener la informaci�n completa para el bolet�n trimestral. Oportunidades para voluntarios durante la noche son las siguientes: Tutora o tutor de Ingl�s o ayudando con los ni�os mientras los padres aprenden Ingl�s.
