Mayor's Youth Council, AkzoNobel Lead Playground Renovation by Creating Massive Mural at Nashville's Non-Profit McGruder Family Resource Center

Nashville's non-profit McGruder Family Resource Center (a partnership of Catholic Charities of Tennessee, United Way of Metropolitan Nashville, and Metro Nashville Public Schools) is about to get a brand-new look for its playground.

The Nashville Mayor's Youth Council (MYC), which is part of the Oasis Center, is partnering up with AkzoNobel - a leading global paints and coatings company -to create a massive mural at the McGruder Center on Saturday, June 1, 2019. The effort, led by local student leaders, and artist Marlos Evans, is the third of four youth-led MYC "Season of Service" community improvement projects taking place this spring across Nashville.

The mural is part of a playground renovation that will also provide upgrades to the outdoor sports complex and recreation space at the McGruder Center. The non-profit organization provides health and social services to children and families in need. The mural will be created by youth and adult artists, community members and volunteers from AkzoNobel, the Oasis Center and Catholic Charities of Tennessee, the lead agency for the McGruder Center.

"McGruder Family Resource Center is committed to having a creative and active space for our young people in this community, says Alisha Haddock, Director of the McGruder Family Resource Center." "Having a youth-led mural project installed at McGruder serves a reminder of what this center means to the community and how important the community is to us. We value our youth in North Nashville and it is important that we create a space that's fun and meaningful-and this mural will help us to do that."

"Creating the mural will beautify the playground at the McGruder Center and create an inviting, safe and joyful space for children in need to play," says Yvette Williger, AkzoNobel People Services Leader. "AkzoNobel has been part of the fabric of the Nashville community since 1947. We are personally and deeply invested in this city and enjoy volunteering for projects alongside Nashville's future generation of leaders."

The McGruder mural project is made possible through a $100,000 community grant from global paints and coatings company AkzoNobel, which funds a series of student-led, civic improvement projects to beautify the city of Nashville. In all, this is the seventh community-wide project born from the partnership between AkzoNobel and the Nashville Mayor's Youth Council. The AkzoNobel grant also provides academic scholarships to Nashville youth.
