Housing and Hospitality Volunteer
Purpose and Impact: Catholic Charities of Tennessee Refugee and Immigration Services provide a wide array of programs to help newly-arrived refugees acquire skills they need to acclimate to American culture and responsibilities. This position is extremely important to the resettlement effort, as it is the first step in ensuring that our clients feel welcome and safe in their new community. When many of our clients arrive to the US, they come with little to no possessions, familiarity, or community; they should not have to arrive at an empty home as well. As a Housing and Hospitality Volunteer, you can assure that all our clients have dignifying home furnishings and a positive start to their new life.
A brief orientation on refugee and immigration issues will be provided on site. This can be an individual or a group volunteer activity. If you wish to arrange a group volunteer effort, please limit the number to 13.
Tasks and Responsibilities: Volunteers will assist with setting up housing. Responsibilities include, but are not necessarily limited, to:
•Sorting through donations
•Organizing sections of donations in our housing warehouse (for example, organizing our children's toy section by age group)
•Making towel and sheet sets for clients
•Picking out items to be placed in the client(s)' home
•Collecting household items from different parts of the warehouse to be supplied to clients
Required Skills: Ability to follow instruction and work with a team.
Preferred Skills: Organizational skills; ability to lift heavy objects is helpful but not required.
Time Commitment: This typically takes 2-3 hours, but volunteers are welcome to work longer. Time slots are flexible, and we can work with your schedule. Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator for information on upcoming work days.
Site and Supervision: This volunteer will be supervised by Jordan Collins, a member of our Housing team. Volunteers will work at our Donation Warehouse, 1210 Davidson Street, Nashville, TN 37206. Please be advised that the building can be warm in the summer; be sure to bring water. Because this is adjacent to a functioning factory and workshop, closed-toed shoes are required.Volunteer Benefits: This position is perfect for people who are satisfied with hands-on work that leads to a concrete, finished product. Volunteers personally choose items for our clients' new home and are directly involved in shaping their new environment. It is also a great opportunity for volunteers to work on team building, meet new people, and build new relationships.
