Housing Set Up Volunteer
Purpose and Impact: Catholic Charities of Tennessee Refugee and Immigration Services provide a wide array of programs to help newly-arrived refugees acquire skills they need to acclimate to American culture and responsibilities. This position is extremely important to the resettlement effort, as it is the first step in ensuring that our clients feel welcome and safe in their new community. When many of our clients arrive to the US, they come with little to no possessions, familiarity, or community; they should not have to arrive at an empty home as well. As a Housing Set-Up Volunteer, you can assure that all our clients have dignifying home furnishings and a positive start to their new life.
A brief orientation on refugee and immigration issues will be provided on site. This can be an individual or a group volunteer activity. If you wish to arrange a group volunteer effort, please limit the number to 13.
Tasks and Responsibilities: Volunteers will assist with setting up apartments and houses. Responsibilities include, but are not necessarily limited, to:
•Wash all dishes
•Put sheets on each bed
•Shop for decorations/toys/etc. using Goodwill gift cards
•Decorate and otherwise set up client(s)' new home
•Clean/tidy up the space
Required Skills: Ability to follow instructions and work with a team.
Preferred Skills: Organizational skills; ability to lift heavy objects is helpful but not required; interest in or experience with interior decorating is a plus.
Time Commitment: Depending on family size, the set-up typically takes between 1-1.5 hours. For the most part, time spent shopping can be done at your own pace. Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator for information on the specific day and time for upcoming work days. Typically, time slots are flexible, and we can work with your schedule.
