So there abide faith, hope, and charity, these three; but the greatest of these is CHARITY. 1 Corinthians 13:13
During the penitential season of Lent, many of us dig deep into our hearts and vow to "make a good Lent."
Perhaps we add Stations of the Cross to our schedule, say the rosary, attend more than one Mass a week, spend time with a devotional or a podcast, volunteer at the parish food pantry-or give up chocolate!
If you are blessed with a bountiful life, making a Lenten sacrifice might not be a great burden. For some in our area, just keeping the faith is a burden, no matter that it is Lent.
* A couple who yearns and prays for many years for the blessing of a child-but has nearly given up in despair-receives news that a birth mother seeks a loving and supportive family who will parent her child.
* A young refugee experiences flashbacks from the horrors she saw in her homeland. After four years in a camp, her family arrives in their new home, Nashville. With the help of a specially trained therapist, she begins to feel safe again.
* An older adult returns to the area from out of state to help her aged mother, but she herself falls ill with cancer, on top of years of suffering with chronic diabetes. She wonders how she is going to manage. She calls upon God for a prayer of gratitude for the familial support that a caseworker brings. Her beautiful, simple prayer: "Jesus Lord, please send your blessings on Catholic Charities and their ministries."
During the 40 days of Lent, we each work to build our own reservoir of charity, to find a stronger connection to God, and to find grace. We at Catholic Charities are tuned in even more acutely to the needs of our neighbors. Inspired by the sacrifice of our Savior, Jesus Christ, we press harder to serve those who wish that their deprivations were a personal choice, rather than imposed on them by misfortune.
